Calling SOS

Calling SOS
EZ Living Interiors steps up again to help make the perfect home for a deserving family in the latest episode of Ireland’s most joyful makeover show.
Just when you think you can’t take the relentless algorithm of yet another home makeover show, whether it’s minimalist or maximalist; colour drenched or gleaming white, DIY SOS: The Big Build Ireland and its authentic storytelling elevates us out of jadedness, tugs at the heart strings and has us reaching for the box of tissues.
Screening on RTE One on Sundays at 6.30pm, episode two saw the larger than life Baz Ashmawy and an astonishing cohort of 1,400 volunteers from across the country, England and Ukraine gathered in Mooncoin, Co. Kilkenny to help parents Sharon and John O’Hanlon finish the building of their home.
Despite sterling and single-handed efforts in the previous 18 months by Sharon’s dad, roofer Mick, to complete this labour of love for his granddaughter who was born with a severe form of spina bifida, encephalitis and a club foot, it was gruelling work 12 hours a day, seven days a week.
“Really, it felt like I was going to put my dad into an early grave,” says Sharon.
But in serious need of a home that could give nine year old Aoibhinn a sense of independence, and to take the pressure off granddad, Aoibhinn’s aunts secretly and successfully applied to the show.
“In just nine days the crazy plan is to complete the dream, a fully accessible home and garden for Aoibhinn,” says Baz as he and the crew of plasterers, carpenters, electricians, roofers, landscapers, designers and volunteers march up the country road to the site to get to work.
Nine days becomes one hour for television viewers with Baz launching into his role as mister motivator, providing encouragement, wit and enthusiasm to keep everyone going.
Stud partitions quickly turn into fully fledged walls, floors are laid, pipes and cables run, and as the project nears the end, decorators get to work as the red and white EZ Living Interiors truck makes an appearance with some of the finishing touches to make the house home, ready for Aoibhinn, her parents and younger siblings, brother Rian and toddler Annie-May, to move in.
It’s an emotional response from Sharon and John as they’re given a guided tour of their new home by Baz.
A lightsome kitchen, dining and living open-plan space is perfect for Aoibinn to negotiate her wheelchair around, and the inclusion of a second sink and hob that can be lowered and elevated now allows her to fully access the kitchen.
Ever the joker, Baz says, “I think the technical name for it is an uppy-downy sink.”
Hidden away behind what seems to be cupboard doors is what Baz calls, “a secret Scooby Doo utility room”. While at the other end of the space, a soft neutral interior design scheme with super-comfortable furniture from EZ Living Interiors includes the family-friendly Santorini corner chaise sofa, two Orson chairs with swivel function, and the upholstered Santino dining chairs.

But star of the show is Aoibhinn’s bedroom giving princess vibes with pink décor and textiles, the pink theme extending to the ensuite wet room now fully functioning for ease of use by her and her parents, with the addition of a cleverly designed hoist running on a discreet ceiling track from her bed to the shower.

Little brother Rian’s room gets an all-blue theme, and Annie-May a white and pink scheme, but for Sharon and John whose only priority was a home that made life easier for Aoibhinn, there’s a surprise.
Designer Kerry Hiddleston deliberately omitted from the design plans she presented to them an extension to the original house layout that includes a bedroom suite just for them.
A colour palette of teal with charcoal accents gives it a chic finish, restful but sophisticated. The Evie teal bedframe, Respa Regent mattress, black Grace lockers and Kendal velvet chair complete the look.

Outdoors, the garden path circumnavigates a lawn so Aoibhinn can fully enjoy the space, and the landscapers have gone a step further building raised planters so she can garden with the rest of the family.
“We will now be able to flourish in this house,” says Sharon. “It’s going to allow us to thrive as a family.”
