Pinterest Predicts

Launching its spring trend report, the platform reveals its analysis of future plans of more than 600 million monthly users

We know trends move at the speed of light where one moment we see something on social media for the first time, and before we know it we’re spotting it while out shopping.

Not all trends land in a major way, though, but we are in the year of micro-trends and micro-projects, which might just play to the more wholesome and personal interior design strategy of later Millennials and Gen Z, where small choices have big impact, rather than opting for a budget-stressing mega project.

With Pinterest claiming an 88% accurate trend prediction rate over the last six years gleaned from searches and pins, it amounts to billions of data points and provides a reliable steer as to what we can expect.

Home Renovations - curated comfort and micro-makeovers

Bold colour, vintage finds, personal creativity and uncomplicated low-labour projects are the way to go, evolving away from the status-boosting trend-driven home in favour of Saturday projects where slathering on a coat of paint or curating a cosy corner for pursuing a hobby takes priority over trying to replicate something from a magazine.

It seems the era of all-white in everything is fading away in favour of my room, my rules, a search topic which has seen a 415% increase. As colours pinned represent personal loves rather than trend diktats, Pinterest tells us moody blue and vintage pink are among the favourites.

Kitchen unit painting projects have seen a hefty 495% search uptick for aubergine kitchens alone, while vintage-meets-modern kitchens, particularly “grandma-core” kitchens, are up a whopping 545%. Going a little further with the theme, “dark cottagecore kitchen” is surging with a 915% increase.

The smallest spaces are finally having their moment this spring. Searches for “comfy reading chair small spaces” have increased four-fold, and “closet reading nook for adults” is on the rise as we retreat to cosy escapes.

Activities: Tiny sanctuaries and intentional connection

Boomers, Gen X and early Millennials might have craved the Bridget Jones aspirational mini-break abroad, but plans for spring activities have a new take, focusing more on the home with low-lift weekend projects.

Think micro escapes, 10-minute garden breaks, renter-friendly balcony makeovers and little outdoor sanctuaries oozing with plant life, all set to make the biggest impact.

If you had any doubt about the “do less, achieve more” mood taking off, garden movie party nights are tipped to be part of our summer social life. For a calmer weekend, usually frenzied by the ever-growing to-do list, mindful reset rituals are prompting searches for “Sunday reset list” and “Sunday reset aesthetic” for a spring that’s less about being on the go and more about feeling your best.

Spring Cleaning and Organising - Cleaning is the new self-care

Listen to feng shui experts drawing on ancient wisdom, self-care gurus and home organising specialists and they’ll all tell you cleaning your home reduces the stress hormone cortisol and increases endorphins, the happy hormones.

We’re no longer needing a once-a-year spring clean, thanks to all the gadgetry and products we have to make the process easier, but we’re now attuning ourselves to what Pinterest calls small resets that feel supportive rather than punishing.

Searches are up, at least doubling, often quadrupling, for “cleaning list by room step by step”, “fridge organisation aesthetic” “laundry room organisation small space”, showing how seriously we’re taking orderly homes.

Interest in greener cleaning products which are more natural, especially refillable and DIY options, has soared by 545%, and, inevitably, it has a name all of its own, “clean-tertainment”.

Home Entertaining - food, friends and stress-free

Here’s one where we intentionally enter our comfort zone isn’t of getting out of it. Apparently, Pinterest users are skipping the virtuous spring detox and having friends and family kitchen gatherings with fresh, modern cooking instead.

Think simple main courses like aubergine parmesan and seafood chowders - searches for both are up 300%. And even here in food preparation sustainability is a focus with an increase in searches for low-waste recipes. It seems left-over spaghetti is a feature of Pinterest-users lives as searches for how to use it up have seen an increase of 570%.

Comforting, informal entertaining has taken on a touch of whimsey too, with breakfast grazing boards, brunch on the balcony, and even picnics where the emphasis is on cake alone so no more making fiddly sandwiches turned soggy by the time you reach the park or beach. Keep it simple, less labour, more fun.
