Sweet Dreams
Sweet Dreams - Bed & Mattress Trends
With the trend for bed being a place to lounge and relax and not just to get our eight hours, let’s have some inspiration to make it the perfect haven with help from EZ Living Interiors
The season of hibernation is firmly in place and now the clocks have gone back and we surrender to hunkering down indoors away from the weather, maybe we ought to take a leaf out of the Gen Z playbook to indulge in its self-care trend: Bed rotting.
Staying in bed all day lounging, drinking coffee, reading a book, and dozing, is the new going out, except it isn’t new, far from it. Our Celtic cousins over in Scotland called it hurkle-durkle in the 19th century so they clearly appreciated the value of nodding off back in the day.
Sleep is officially the new luxury, with cosy, fleecy dog beds being designed for adults to relax kitted out in their best sleepwear. Suddenly, there’s even a glut of celebrities keen to show off their bedrooms, designed to within an inch of their lives, of course.
Singer Paloma Faith has gone for the boudoir look in the main bedroom of her eclectically designed London home using a mix of on-trend maximalism and historic Chesterfield sofas. It’s a dramatic and attention-grabbing look with an ox-blood leather sleigh bed, moody grey mirrored wardrobes, and charcoal wallpaper punctuated by enormous orange blooms.
While we might not have the Beibers’ budget there’s no shortage of modular style at EZ Living Interiors. Winter is coming and it’s time to get into your comfort zone, and where better than on the sofa especially one that offers comfort and flexibility.
Steal the Style: The Pearl bed in cream fabric upholstery gives you the idea without the colour-commitment if ox blood is a bit OTT (from €899). It also has divan base storage when the seductive nature of aesthetics wears off and practical considerations kick in.
The Belmont bedframe in velvet is even closer in style in a moody smoke grey (from €999), and for a more contemporary, streamlined nod to the look but leaning more into colour drama, try the Scott bedframe (from €599) draped in orange buttoned velvet upholstery. Add in the pebble grey Beckett mirror wardrobe (from €1,199) and you have your own style influence on the look without the celebrity interior designer fees.
Considering Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher admitted last year to infrequent showering and only washing certain body parts with soap, would it be fair to assume they might be into a spot of bed rotting?
Possibly, as they’ve recently designed a bedroom for themselves, but rumour has it that they’ve now sold their Beverley Hills five-bed for $14m. They have, however, revamped the guest room in their farmhouse with a look that’s more luxe than rustic.
Steal the Style: For your own take, the Cassius bedframe in dark rust velvet is a fit (from €599), or the buttoned Embrace (from €649), adding in the faux fur stripe cream throw to drape across it (€45). Add a pair of Louis Phillipe antique style nightstands (€199 each), a pair of Lorelei ceramic table lamps (€79 each) or the Caja marble lamps (€89 each). Finish the look with the Fritz charcoal ottoman (€449) placed at the foot of the bed.
Orange and blue are now the go-to combination for the colour confident. Katy Perry took it in a slightly different direction with a more sophisticated turquoise and apricot tone in her bedroom, with buttercup yellow accents for a ‘70s-inflected finish.
It’s all set to change now that she and Orlando Bloom have split up and she and Justin Trudeau have just gone public. She’s even gone further than the mantra, “change your man, change your mattress”, and put the house on the market so her look is ripe for the taking.
Steal the style: Try the Florence cream upholstered bed frame (from €999), or the cuddly Teddy creamy bouclé (from €699). Add in the large orange Nomad rug (€129) with a pair of Palm wood and rattan nightstands (€199) or the Malmo acacia wood models (€179). For the essential pop of something yellowish, the Cody copper chair is compact and bedroom size (€129).
But if there’s one absolutely essential item for successful bed rotting it’s a comfortable mattress that’s always worth investing in. Something like the King Koil Extended Life Support with 1,200 nested pocket springs will work wonders if you need some extra support while resting (from €749).
Hot sleepers might benefit from the Respa Cloud pocket sprung mattress with cooling properties (from €749), so you don’t over-heat while languishing under the duvet on a Saturday morning.
But if you’re keen to get your bed rotting practice underway, the Joya mattress might be just what you’re looking for. It comes in a handy take-away box that will fit on the back seat of the car and unfurl on your bedframe in minutes ready to use (from €499 for a 4’6” double). By the time Christmas holidays come round, you can bed rot for days.
